On Place Delille, "a square shaded by plane trees in the very heart of Clermont-Ferrand" in the words of Alexandre Vialatte himself, stands the Hôtel Littéraire Alexandre Vialatte. The writer left his mark on Clermont and the Auvergne with his contribution of nearly 900 columns to the newspaper “La Montagne,” in which he reinvented the literary genre. This third Literary Hotel pays tribute to him, to share with all visitors our admiration for this “notoriously unknown” author, as he liked to point out.
Enjoying a very central location, the hotel boasts one of the most beautiful panoramas known over the rooftops of Clermont-Ferrand. The terrace on the 6th floor offers a 180° view of the Puy de Dôme, the Puys mountain range, and the cathedral spires.
The decoration consists of a playful journey discovering Vialatte, his region, and his work. Architect Aude Bruguière, assisted by interior decorator Aleth Prime, composed a harmonious ensemble inviting rest and comfort. There are nods to the “advertisements,” those vintage posters that Vialatte loved to comment on, like the Michelin Man, the Singer sewing machine, or the "Dame du Job".
The 62 rooms of the Hôtel Littéraire Alexandre Vialatte bear the name of a novel character, a column, one of his translations of Kafka - whom he helped introduce in France - a close friend, or a place in his Auvergne. Quotes adorn the walls, not far from watercolor paintings by Jean Aubertin.
The Hôtel Littéraire Alexandre Vialatte offers its visitors a library of over five hundred books. Paperback editions to revisit the writer's columns, but also rare editions for bibliophiles. A permanent exhibition of sculptures by his friend and accomplice Philippe Kaeppelin is visible in the showcases on the ground floor, with poetic titles given by Vialatte.
Literary events are regularly organized in the hotel. The most prestigious is certainly the Alexandre Vialatte literary prize, awarded each year in the hotel, in partnership with the La Montagne/Centre-France group.
